MARK 14
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was
reclining at the table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.
4 There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment.
wasted like that? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and
given to the poor.”
And they scolded her.
6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her?
She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.
8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.
9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world,
what she has done will be told in memory of her.”
Why was Bethany so important to Jesus?
For Jesus, the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus in Bethany was “the last homely house.” It was where he was regularly welcomed at supper as one of the family (Luke 10:38–42).
The Greek word for ALABASTER is Dictionary:
“Alabastros”
Alabaster jar; a long-necked flask, the top of which was broken off to empty its
alabaster vase
This jar was full of anointing oil. It was expensive.
One of the spices was the same spice given at Yeshua’s Birth
Myrrh – This is often used for burials
It means Bitter
But there would have been other spices and oils in that mix.
It is used in the gospels
Matthew 26:7 a woman came to him with an alabaster alabastron flask of very expensive perfume that she poured over his head as he reclined at table.
Mark 14:3 And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he reclined at table, there came a woman with an alabaster alabastron flask of the very costly anointment of pure nard; and breaking the flask alabastron she poured it over his head.
Luke 7:37 Now there was a woman known in the city as a sinner, and when she learned that Jesus was reclining at a table in the house of the Pharisee, she brought an alabaster alabastron jar of perfume.
The alabaster box was Mary’s “first fruits”, she brought her absolute best and most expensive item to pour over YESHUA our Lord and Saviour. She believed in Jesus, she anointed Him even before His death and burial.
There is a DIVINE ORDER TO GODS KINGDOM. This was that.
She also gave him her most valuable item for Christ
We are called to pick up our crosses and to follow Jesus.
Matthew 16:24 says, “Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
All that this world has to offer us is nothing compared to Christ.
Let us pray
Father thank you, Mary poured out all she had to you and your feet.
In humility, she anointed you for your burial. We recognise there is a divine order to your Kingdom only the best for Yeshua.
This was misunderstood by the betrayer Judas who had nothing good to say. But you reminded Judas the reason for Marys love and pouring out for you.
We position ourselves at your feet in humility and reverence once again pouring out all we have for you recognising both death Life and resurrection. We recognise that the anointing breaks the YOKE. That true anointing carried for eternity and that Yeshua was Hebrew so this was also a custom for burial. The Father always does things in divine order and right.
In your precious name Yeshua AMEN
